Kunmanara Tiger Yaltangki (1973- 2024)
House of Darwin had the privilege of collaborating with Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki at the beginning of 2024. This collaboration was more than just showcasing his artwork; it was a beautiful fusion of storytelling and art, a celebration of his unique talent and perspective.
Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki was an artist from the Yankunytjatjara community in Indulkana. Being predominantly non-verbal, his creations spoke volumes about his experiences, culture, and inspirations. Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki's ability to express himself through art transcended language barriers, reminding us of the power of creativity.
Drawing from the Anangu belief in 'mamu' (spiritual entities), alongside inspiration from sci-fi films and TV series like Doctor Who and The Mighty Boosh, he intricately wove these elements into his whimsical visual narratives. Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki's deep love of music accompanied his creative process, ranging from Creedence Clearwater Revival to country melodies and local desert reggae, with AC/DC rock serving as a constant inspiration for the artist, repeatedly appearing in his artwork.
Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki's brush was magic, the colours spoke new stories with old tongues. His art served as a joyful homage to the multitude of influences that shaped his world, amplifying his story and empowering his self-expression.
